[Cartilage inducing factor A] This factor is isolated from demineralised bovine bones. It is a dimer consisting of two 13 kDa subunits. Another form of this factor found during purification and designated CIF-B is related to CIF-A but differs from it in its aminoterminal sequence.
The known sequence of the first 30 aminoterminal amino acids and also some of the biological and biochemical characteristics of both factors suggest that CIF-A is identical with BSC-1 cell growth inhibitor which, in turn, is identical with TGF-beta-1 (see: TGF-beta) isolated from platelets. CIF-B is identical with TGF-beta-2 (see: TGF-beta).
