[CHROMO domains]
[chromatin organization modifier domain] This domain comprises 30-70 amino acids and is found in proteins from fungi, protists, plants, fish, insects, amphibians, birds, and mammals. It was found first in some Drosophila melanogaster proteins (Polycomb [Pc] and heterochromatin protein 1 [HP1]) that modify the structure of chromatin to the condensed morphology of heterochromatin (Paro and Hogness, 1991; Paro, 1990; Ball et al, 1997). This causes a cytologically visible condition where gene expression is repressed. Chromo-domain proteins appear to be a central component in the epigenetic regulation of heterochromatin function and euchromatic gene expression. The domain
