[CFCs]
[Colony-forming cells] A general term referring to bone marrow-derived hematopoietic stem cells that, unlike pluripotent stem cells of the marrow, can be shown to be committed in their development to a particular lineage (see also: hematopoiesis). These cells are called simply also progenitor cells (see also: hematopoietic progenitor cells).
These cells are unique in their physiological environment and in certain proliferative and differentiative capacities and can give rise to individual colonies when grown in soft agar (see also: Colony formation assay; see also: Limiting dilution analysis) following treatment with
