This cell type has been isolated from murine skeletal muscle and is present in multiple tissues (Howell et al, 2003). The cells are very small, do not express CD45 or SCF receptors but do express the stem cell antigen Sca-1, may represent a population of so-called small stem cells. They probably constitute a subpopulation of multipotent stem cells described as VSEL-SC [very small embryonic-like stem cells]. Under conditions permissive for hematopoietic differentiation, these muscle-derived cells differentiate into cells expressing hematopoietic-specific mRNA; while in conditions promoting myogenic, neuronal, and adipocytic
