[C2 domains]
[Protein kinase C conserved region 2; PKC conserved region 2] This protein domain of approximately 130 residues has been discovered originally as a Ca2+ binding site in conventional protein kinase C (Nalefski and Falke, 1996). This domain is a membrane targeting domain that is present also in many other proteins (Nalefski et al, 1996; Rizo and Südhof, 1998). C2 domains do not have a well-defined lipid-binding pocket and thus show relatively weak lipid specificity. Some proteins contain Ca2+-independent C2 domains (Das et al, 2003), but still bind the membrane. Some C2 domains are involved in protein-protein interactions (Wang et al, 1999).
