C105Y is a synthetic peptide (CSIPPEVKFNKPFVYLI) based on the amino acid sequence corresponding to residues 359-374 of alpha-1-antitrypsin that mediates binding to the serpin enzyme complex receptor (sec-R) (Joslin et al, 1991; Zlady et al, 1997; Rhee and Davis, 2006).
The peptide is a cell-penetrating peptide that is internalized by a pathway independent of clathrin and caveolin (Rhee and Davis, 2006). The peptide has been shown to enhance gene expression when included into DNA nanoparticles. Studies in mice have shown significant enhancement of gene transfer in the lung, liver, and spleen by inclusion of C105Y in DNA complexes (Zlady et al, 2004) .
