[C1 domains]
[Protein kinase C conserved region 1; PKC conserved region 1] C1 domains are approximately 50 amino acids long and are enriched in cysteine residues (Zhang et al, 2002). These domains are involved in the recruitment of proteins to the membrane and can bind phorbol esters, diacylglycerol, or phosphatidylserine, which are required for activation and membrane localization, of protein kinase C family members (Ho et al, 2001; Johnson et al, 2000). Thus, this domain can function as a membrane targeting domain.
A single C1 domain is found also in "nonkinase" phorbol ester
