[Bullwhip cell]
These cells, called also bullwhip neurons, and smaller variants called mini-bullwhip cells, have been described by Ehrlich et al (1987). They are specialized neurons found in the chicken retina. There are about 1000 Bullwhip and mini-bullwhip cells per retina.
These cells have been shown to express glucagon and substance P. The cells are immunoreactive for calretinin, HuD, Pax6, and AP2-alpha and are identical with a subpopulation of neurons expressing glucagon described by Fischer et al (2005, 2006).
