Brucella abortus Omp19
Omp19 is an outer membrane protein of Brucella abortus (Tibor et al, 1999). The lipidated form of this protein (L-Omp19), but not the unlipidated form, induces the secretion of IL6, IL1-beta, TNF-alpha, CCL2, and CXCL1 in microglial cells and astrocytes (García Samartino et al, 2010). Omp19 thus elicits an inflammatory response that leads to astrogliosis, a characteristic feature of neurobrucellosis. Omp19 and B. abortus infection also induce cell death by apoptosis in astrocytes, but not in microglial cells, and also elicits astrocyte proliferation, two features observed during astrogliosis.
