[BEFV alpha-1 protein] This protein is encodfed in the genome of Bovine ephemeral fever virus. The protein is expressed in infected cells and has the properties of a channel-forming viroporin. Expression of a BEFV alpha-1-maltose binding protein fusion protein in Escherichia coli inhibits cell growth and increases membrane permeability to hygromycin B. Increased membrane permeability is not observed in mammalian cells infected with viruses lacking this protein.
The protein localizes to the Golgi complex and may modulate also components of nuclear trafficking pathways as demonstrated by the observation that the C-terminal cytoplasmic domain
