This dermonecrotic toxin is one of the toxins and virulence factors produced by Bordetella pertussis, the etiologic agent of whooping cough, and various other members of the genus (Walker and Lacerda, 1997; Weiss, 1994), including Bordetella parapertussis, Bordetella bronchiseptica (145 kDa; Horiguchi et al, 1989), which causes atrophic rhinitis and pneumonia in swine, and Bordetella avium (155 kDa; Gentry-Weeks et al, 1988). The DNA sequence of the Bordetella bronchiseptica toxin gene is more than 99 % homologous to the gene of Bordetella pertussis (Pullinger et al, 1996). A similar dermonecrotic toxin is produced by the genetically unrelated Pasteurella multocida (see: Pasteurella multocida toxin) and the Bordetella toxin shares many of the Pasteurella toxin.
The dermonecrotic toxin of Bordetella avium is lethal for mice, guinea pigs
