[Bradysia hygida salivary gland antimicrobial peptide-1] This antimicrobial peptide has been identified in the fly Bradysia hygida (Candido-Silva JA et al, 2007). It is expressed and secreted by salivary glands of the larvae while they are preparing to molt. The peptide has been shown to be active against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Saccharomyces spp., and Candida albicans. It is thought to play a role in innate immunity and may prevent microbial infection during molting. Zanarotti et al (2009) have reported that the gene encoding BhSGAMP-1 is directly activated by 20-OH ecdysone.
