[Betz cell]
a kind of ganglion cell, called also giant pyramidal cells, found in the internal pyramidal layer of the cerebral cortex (Betz, 1874, 1881). Betz cells are found in the primary motor cortex and are involved in setting muscle tone prior to fine motor output in different species (Sherwood et al, 2003). See also: neurons. Some of the cells described by Betz, not necessarily those in the motor cortex, may be the same cell type described as von Economo neurons.
