This cell line is a non-Burkitt B-lymphoma cell line established by Lok et al (1979) from the pleural effusion of a patient with a poorly differentiated diffuse lymphocytic lymphoma. The cells lack the Epstein-Barr virus genome and have abnormal chromosome constitutions including a 14q+ marker. They express surface immunoglobulin isotypes (gamma and chi chain determinants), and Ia-like B-cell-associated antigen.
BALM-4 cells have been used to assay IL4 (see also: bioassays, cytokine assays) (Calklard et al, 1988; Shields et al, 1987). The activity of the factor is determined by measuring the incorporation of tritiated thymidine into the newly synthesized DNA of proliferating cells
