A form of cell death involving progressive loss of organelle-free fragments of cytoplasm through a series of self-excisions in response to oxidative stress (Gilloteaux et al, 2004). This process was discovered during the investigation of the cytotoxic effects of vitamin C, vitamin K3 (synthetic vitamin K, menadione), or combinations of these two compounds on the human T24 bladder carcinoma cell line (Gilloteaux et al, 1998). The same process is observed also after treatment of the cells with ascorbic acid in combination with vitamin K3 (Gilloteaux et al, 2001). A scanning electron and light microscopy study of human ovarian carcinoma cells treated with ascorbate, vitamin K3 or combinations of these two compounds has revealed that 43 % of the cells die
