This antibacterial peptide of 16 amino acids (FKVQNQHGQVVKIFHH) has been isolated from plasma of the freshwater crayfish, Pacifastacus leniusculus (Lee et al, 2003). Astacidin-1 has a broad range of antibacterial activity, and it inhibits growth of both Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria. Astacidin-1 is the carboxyl-terminal part of crayfish hemocyanin and is produced by proteolytic cleavage from the copper-binding protein hemocyanin under acidic conditions. The processing and release of Astacidin-1 from hemocyanin is enhanced when crayfish are injected with lipopolysaccharide or glucan. For another antibacterial peptide from Pacifastacus leniusculus see also: Astacidin-2.
