Aplysianin E has been isolated from the supernatant of a homogenate of eggs of the sea hare Aplysia kurodai (Kisugi et al, 1987). The protein may play a role in immune processes. The protein may play a role in immune processes. Aplysianin E has been shown to lyse tumor cells but does not lyse normal white cells or red blood cells. Aplysianin E also prolongs the survival of mice bearing syngeneic MM46 ascites or solid tumors. Aplysianin E is active against Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria and its activity is due to a complete inhibition of DNA and RNA synthesis (Kisugi et al, 1989). Iijima et al (1995) have reported that Aplysianin E is active also against Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Schizosaccharomyces pombe, and Candida albicans.
