[Antigene RNA]
Antigene RNAs, also antigenomic RNAs (abbr. agRNAs) are similar to siRNAs in that they are duplex small non-coding RNAs. In contrast to siRNAs, for which the guide strand is complementary to the mRNA, the guide strand of agRNA duplexes is the sense strand. Antigene RNAs have been shown to either cause transcriptional gene silencing in the nucleus (Morris et al, 2004; Janowski et al, 2005, 2006) or to activate gene expression at the transcriptional level (Li LC et al, 2006; Janowski et al, 2007; Morris et al, 2008; for overview see also Suzuki and Kelleher, 2009). Gene silencing by Antigene RNAs requires the participation of argonaute family proteins, similar to siRNA and microRNAs
