[Antigen-presenting cell]
abbr. APCs. Called also: antigen-processing cells. A collective term pertaining to a large group of different cell types that are found throughout the body and at distinct anatomic sites and that are capable of activating the immune system and inducing an immune response by presenting, on their surface, processed antigens to T-cells (see also: sentinel cells) (Sigal, 2001; Rodriguez-Pinto, 2005; Rossi and Young, 2005). The term Immunologic accessory cells has been used also. The antigen presentation process requires that antigens be presented on the cell surface in a complex with MHC molecules.
