Alternative spelling Anichkov cells (named after the Russian physician Nikolaj Nikolajewitsch Anitschkow (1885-1964). In older references referred to also as Anitschkow myocyte, cardiac histiocytes, or caterpillar cells (because of the caterpillar-like chromatin structure).
These cells are found in specific lesions in the heart muscle and valves (called Aschoff nodules) that are found in association with rheumatic fever in children and young adults. It has been suggested that these cells are modified myocytes, but Fraser et al (1995) have reported that the cells express macrophage markers and thus may be resident macrophages
