This assay employs subcutaneous injection of (tumor) cells entrapped in alginate beads to study angiogenesis induced by tumor cells and possible inhibitors of angiogenesis.
The formation of new blood vessel can be studied by gross morphological and histological analysis of the alginate pellet site. Results can be quantitated by measuring the amount of hemoglobin at the alginate pellet site, and by pooling of radiolabeled red blood cells to the alginate pellet site.
