Adipose tissue macrophages

[adipose tissue macrophage]

abbr. ATMs. See also: macrophages.

This is a collective term for resident macrophages present in adipose tissue. The number of macrophages in human subcutaneous and visceral adipose tissues increases with the degree of adiposity in humans (Curat et al, 2004, 2006; Cancello et al, 2006; Wentworth et al, 2010) and mouse models of obesity (Weisberg et al, 2003; Xu et al, 2003). In mice, macrophage accumulation within the fat mass induced by a high-fat diet appears to be more related to the insulin-resistant state associated with obesity than to the increase in the fat mass (Xu et al, 2003; Shaul et al, 2010).
