[mitochondrial ATP Synthase-alpha]; approved gene symbol: ATP5F1A [ATP synthase F1 subunit alpha] also: ATP5A1, F0F1-ATP synthase alpha subunit; F1F0-ATP synthase alpha subunit. The ATP5A1 gene encodes the alpha subunit of the catalytic core of mitochondrial ATP synthase F1 complex (Kataoka and Biswas, 1991; Akiyama et al, 1994). Apart from its role in energy metabolism, ATP5A appears to have other functions and thus can be regarded as a member of a growing group of proteins referred to as moonlighting proteins.
