[ARM domains]
[armadillo domain] This protein domain of approximately 42-45 amino acids has been observed originally in the Drosophila melanogaster segment polarity protein armadillo, which is the homolog of human beta-catenin. A variety of mammalian proteins contain one or more copies of this domain (Peifer et al, 1994) and are divided into subfamilies depending on the number of repeats, their overall sequence similarity, and the dispersion of these repeats within the protein sequences (Schleif, 1999; Conti et al, 1998). The ARM domain is implicated in mediating protein-protein interactions. No common features among the target proteins recognized by the ARM repeats have been identified. The ARM domain has been implicated in nuclear import (Conti et al, 1998).
