[activated T-cell autonomous death]. This term was used originally to describe cell death by apoptosis of T-cells in patients with HIV1 infections (Gougeon, 2003), which undergo spontaneous apoptosis in the absence of exogenous stimulation. The process is one of intrinsic apoptosis and involves downregulation of the expression of BCL2. The process is prevented by cytokines such as IL2 (Adachi et al, 1996) or IL15 (Naora and Gougeon, 1999).
