[anti-apoptosis clone 11] The approved gene symbol for AAC-11 is API5 [Apoptosis inhibitor 5]. The factor has been identified independently as a protein interacting with nuclear forms of bFGF (see: FIF).
AAC-11 is expressed ubiquitously in embryonic and adult tissues with multiple transcripts. It is expressed also in various human tumor cell lines. AAC-11 may function as an inhibitor of cell death by apoptosis because its expression supports cell survival after withdrawal of growth factors or cytokines. 3T3 fibroblasts engineered to express AAC-11 are viable in serum-free medium
