[A-like cell]
These cells are found in the acid-producing gastric fundic mucosa (Solcia et al, 1975). A-like cells are called also A-cells because their round, regular moderately dense granules (0.2-0.25 micrometer) resemble those in pancreatic A-cells (Pearse et al, 1970). These cells do not represent the endocrine APUD cells that synthesize histamine (Rubin and Schwartz, 1984).
These endocrine cells are the main source of the circulating peptide hormone Ghrelin (Kojima et al, 1999; Tschop et al, 2000) and are, therefore, also being referred to as Ghrelin cells or Gr cells. For another designation see also: X/A-like cells.
