7SL RNA (Ullu et al, 1982), known also as 7L1a, RN7SL, RNSRP1, is encoded by the RN7SL1 gene. 7SL RNA is thought to be the common ancestor of so-called Alu RNAs encoded by Alu elements, an abundant class of middle repetitive DNA sequences that probably originated from duplication of the 7SL RNA gene (Ullu E and Tschudi, 1984; Kriegs et al, 2007). 7SL RNA is a long non-coding RNA of 301 nucleotides that is a component of the host signal recognition particle, a cytoplasmic ribonucleoprotein complex that mediates cotranslational insertion of secretory proteins into the lumen of the endoplasmic reticulum (Ullu and Weiner, 1984). The RN7SL1 gene is transcribed by RNA polymerase III
