7-amino-actinomycin D (abbr. 7-AAD) is a nonvital DNA dye used to distinguish late apoptotic or necrotic cells that have lost membrane integrity from early apoptotic cells that still have intact membranes as assayed by dye exclusion. Necrotic cells lose membrane integrity early and become 7-AAD(+), but do not pass through a stage where they demonstrate increased fluorescence with Hoechst 33342 (Schmid et al, 1994; Ormerod et al, 1992). Staining with 7-aminoactinomycin D can be used also in flow cytometry (Zembruski et al, 2012).
