[African swine fever virus 5EL protein] The protein is encoded by an open reading frame in the genome of the pathogenic African isolate Malawi Lil-20/1 of African swine fever virus. The open reading frame A238L in the genome of a cell-culture-adapted European virus encodes the same protein. Both proteins are functional I-kappa-B homologous genes that downregulate the expression of transcription factor NF-kappa-B (Neilan et al, 1997). 5EL also interacts with the cellular phosphatase calcineurin and inhibits its phosphatase activity.
