one of the subgroups of the family of chemotactic proteins known as chemokines. An older designation is Alpha-Chemokines. For another systematic nomenclature of chemokines see also: SCY family of cytokines.
The name refers to a gene cluster on human chromosome 4q12-q21, which harbors many chemokine genes (Tunacliffe et al, 1992). This family of chemokines is defined by the location of the first two cysteine residues in the sequence, which are separated by one amino acid. Members of this family are usually called CXC-Chemokines.
