The monoclonal antibody of this name has been isolated by Nussenzweig et al (1982). It recognizes an as yet unidentified protein, which is used widely as a marker specific for murine dendritic cells. 33D1 is expressed on dendritic cell subpopulations in the thymus, spleen, lymph node, and Peyer’s patches. In bone marrow dendritic cells 33D1 is expressed only after exposure to GM-CSF. Expression is downregulated in the presence of IL4 (Masurier et al, 1999). Herouet et al (1999) have reported expression of 33D1 on Langerhans cells.
