This 150 kDa GPI-anchored protein has been identified by Finnson et al (2006). The protein is expressed in keratinocytes. An isoform is expressed in the placenta but not in keratinocytes.
Loss and gain of function studies demonstrate that the protein is a component of the TGF-beta receptor system, and a negative modulator of TGF-beta responses in keratinocytes. The protein can inhibit TGF-beta signaling independently of ligand sequestration and may exert its effect on TGF-beta signaling by direct modulation of receptor activity. Keratinocytes defective in glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchor biosynthesis display enhanced TGF-beta responses.
