[14-3-3 domains]
14-3-3 constitutes a highly conserved and ubiquitously expressed family of proteins of approximately 30 kDa. Among other things, these proteins are involved in signaling of growth factors, interfere with cell death by apoptosis and the cell cycle, and also interact with MEK kinases. The 14-3-3 domain (Rittinger et al, 1999) is a protein-protein-interaction domain that mediates signal transduction by binding to proteins containing phosphoserine residues (Muslin et al, 1996). 14-3-3 binding may directly alter protein activity, control nuclear-cytoplasmic shuttling, mediate protein import into mitochondria and chloroplasts, or form a scaffold to permit interactions between two different binding proteins.
